Cemex sales in the Dominican Republic, where the company has a cement plant, fell 25% in the last quarter of 2008, compared with the first half of the year. About 20% of its personnel has been laid off since December.

Four cement companies have indicated that they are interested in a potential strategic alliance with the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Cement Factory, a subsidiary of Lanka Cement (LC) of Sri Lanka.

Titan Cement is looking to appeal a US court ruling that bans mining at the company's quarries in Florida, USA, the company said in a statement on Monday.

Indonesia's Semen Gresik has appointed Credit Suisse to advise the company on its already announced overseas acquisition program.

Cemex confirmed that it is to almost double its planned asset divestitures to more than $2 billion in 2009. The company will use proceeds to reduce outstanding debt.

Semen Gresik is forming plans to buy foreign cement operations as a part of a new three year growth strategy. The plan also includes extensive local plant expansions to defend market share.
